What is an ISBN and why does it matter?
An International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a unique 13-digit commercial book identifier. It allows booksellers, libraries, and distributors to track a specific version of a book. Each format of your book—hardback, paperback, and sometimes ebook—requires its own unique number.
Free KDP ISBNs vs. Buying Your Own
When you use publishing support tools to upload your manuscript to Amazon, you are faced with a choice: use a free ISBN provided by KDP or provide your own.
The Free Option
Amazon provides free ISBNs for paperbacks and hardbacks. The benefit is clear: it costs nothing. However, the 'Imprint' (the publisher name) will permanently be listed as 'Independently Published'. You also cannot use this specific number to print your book with other services like IngramSpark.
The Paid Option
In the UK, you buy ISBNs from Nielsen. Buying your own allows you to choose your own imprint name, such as 'Green Meadow Press'. This looks more professional to bookshop buyers and gives you total portability if you decide to move your book to a different printer later.
Do Ebooks Need ISBNs?
Technically, no. Amazon uses an ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) to manage Kindle books. Most self-published authors skip the ISBN for ebooks to save money. However, if you want your ebook to be available in public libraries or on other platforms like Apple Books, having one is recommended.
Common ISBN Mistakes
- Using the same ISBN for different formats: Your paperback and hardback must have different numbers.
- Buying from 're-sellers': Always buy directly from the official national agency (Nielsen in the UK) to ensure you are the legal owner.
- Waiting too long: You need your number during the formatting stage if you want to include it on your copyright page.
